Update
In general, the course is standing up well to the winter conditions. Please be patient with any necessary seasonal initiatives that are put in place in order to keep the course open for as long as possible. These measures should also help contribute to provide a better product for the 2012 playing season.
Buggies and trolleys: the use of buggies and trolleys is now under constant review. NOTE:- in due course, the use of pull trolleys only may need to be employed if ground conditions become extremely soft/wet. As much notice as possible will be given if this is the case. Please check the web site or call the course information line for the current status.
"Traffic" management: Extra white lining and roping off has now been employed to reduce the most concentrated wear due to the use of trolleys on the increasingly soft, wet ground. This is especially necessary at Wellingborough due to the primarily clay based ground conditions. Please try to respect the directions where possible.
Main greens: these will continue to be regularly slit-tined (and occasionally solid-tined) to provide additional aeration. Due to the colder temperatures the greens are being cut infrequently at a height of 5mm. Light top-dressing with sand may still take place if condtions are suitable.
Practice putting green: in October the immediate surround was sprayed to remove unwanted rye grasses and the surfaces then heavily over-seeded and top-dressed. The surround is gradually growing in although its progress is somewhat slower than was originally anticipated.
Frost/snow policy - greens: It is the responsibility of the Head Greenkeeper or, in his absence the Assistant Head Greenkeeper, to decide on a day-to-day basis the need for temporary greens and whether they are to be brought into use due to frost or snow. The course information helpline should be updated (by 8am weekdays and by 7.30am at weekends). The web site should also reflect the status of the greens. As in previous winters, if temporary greens have been brought into play during the course of a Saturday or Sunday, then in general they will remain in play for the whole day even if a partial thaw takes place.
Bunker work: The work on the greenside bunkers on the 2nd has now been completed. Whilst the turf is establishing itself, the whole bunker complexes including the sand and their grass surrounds have been roped off and are GUR from which relief must be taken without penalty. This will be reviewed periodically. Work has started on the greenside bunkers on the 14th. These bunkers are receiving similar treatment to the 2nd and the same relief will be applicable once the work is complete.
For the benefit of your fellow golfers:
- Please repair / replace divots (soil is provided on some tees for this purpose) and pitch marks
- Please rake out foot / ball / club marks in bunkers
